We have a strong track record of working with undergraduate researchers, including many continuing to strong CS PhD programs, established companies, and startups. Projects typically focus on implementing, and then improving, state-of-the-art image understanding systems in close collaboration with a graduate student or a postdoc. We are especially interested in students that are likely to pursue a graduate degree at WashU.

Qualifications

• [required] strong English oral and written communications skills
• [required] knowledge of the fundamental concepts of machine learning
• [required] a strong desire to learn and build
• [ideal] strong programming skills (we implement primarily in Python)
• [ideal] ability to build basic systems using machine learning and/or mathematical optimization
• [helpful] practical experience with deep learning and/or computer vision
• [helpful] ability to build large-scale data processing systems using Linux tools

Please note that we are not likely to be taking on any new students outside of our REU program until Fall 2023. That said, we may make exceptions for students that meet the majority of requirements listed above.
